JT Berger was riding west on Lincoln Highway in Guilford Township when he had a green light and entered the intersection at Ragged Edge Road — striking a 32-year-old Maryland woman's 2016 Chrysler 200 making a right turn at a red light onto Lincoln Highway around 2:37 p.m., Jan. 26, state police detailed in a release.
The police noted that Berger switched from the left lane to the right lane just before striking the Chrysler.
The force of the collision tossed Berger from his bike and into the path of the Chrysler — which then drove over him police said.
His 2013 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide crashed into a 20-year-old Chambersburg woman's 2004 Honda Accord, police explained.
Berger was taken by the Fayetteville Volunteer Fire Department to Chambersburg Hospital, where he later died, according to PSP.
The Maryland driver reportedly suffered a "suspect minor injury" but was not taken to the hospital, troopers said. No charges were filed against either woman involved in the crash.
JT was born in Ohio but raised in the Bronx, according to his obituary and social media. He attended New York Military Academy, High School For Environmental Studies, and Satellite Academy High School, as detailed on his social media.
He proudly served in both the US Army and the US Air Force Reserves before a medical issue required him to retire, his obituary noted. He also briefly worked at Lowe's Home Improvement in loss prevention and then spent seven years working in the PA Dept of Corrections.
JT was also "a member of the American Legion and VFW, in both Chambersburg and Waynesboro, PA, where he participated as a member of the US Military Veteran’s Motorcycle Club. He was also a member of the Marine Corps League in Chambersburg, and an active member of the Mason Dixon Motorcycle Club," as stated in his obituary.
Along the way, he married Jennifer Fickes Berger and they had just celebrated 24 years of marriage two days before the fatal crash, according to his obituary.
His community has already been sharing about its tragic loss on social media.
He is survived by his parents, Jeff and Teresa Jo Berger; his wife; their three children; two siblings, Trevor Berger (wife London) of Bronx, NY and Taylor Berger (wife Jen) of Scarsdale, NY; his paternal grandparents, Helen “Mom Mom” and Jimmy “PaPaw” Jackson of Jackson, MS; a niece, and three nephews, his obituary details.
His Celebration of Life service will be held at the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Inc., 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg at 3 p.m. with a visitation for friends and family at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024. Pastor Andy Ficks will officiate.
The funeral will be held with military honors. Instead of sending flowers, the family asks that donations be made in JT’s name to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.
